It’s tough having to road-test relaxation treatments but someone had to do it!…

What better on a wet and windy February day when that ugh feeling gets a hold of you than a sumptuous salon-quality spa treatment in the comfort of your own home? Nicole from Haybarn Mobile Beauty arrived on the dot for our 11.30am appointment and quickly transformed the snug into a cosy salon area with her professional massage table complete with heated blanket (ooh), soft towels and snuggly blankets (aah).

I asked how come her company was called “Haybarn Mobile Beauty” (by happy coincidence we have a Hay Barn holiday cottage here at Halsbeer Farm). She confided in me that the name “Cowshed” was already taken and anyway she worked on a dairy farm three mornings a week milking cows and looking after calves so wanted something with a rural feel. Just goes to show you can’t read a book by its cover – I would never have imagined that this petite blonde beauty therapist was a part-time farmer. Just brilliant that she is able to enjoy two such apparently different vocations, both of which she evidently loves.

Nicole started with a gorgeous back massage using a blend of soya bean oil and wheatgerm. She prefers not to use nut-based oils such as almond in case of allergies. During the massage I could smell the lovely fragrance of lavender and ylang ylang coming from the warming face mitts that Nicole would go on to use during my half hour facial. Soft music and tweeting of birdsong played from Nicole’s phone – accompanying the sounds of the wind whistling down the chimney that only emphasised how snug and secure we were indoors while the wild weather hurled itself around outside.

She uses a range of products called Skin Truth that I’d not come across before but which smelled and felt lovely on my skin. I particularly liked the orchid and ginseng fragrances of the cleansing milk and mask and the rose and acai berry-scented massage cream.

As well as individual treatments Nicole can cater for pamper parties at the cottages or yurts. Ideal for groups of hens, birthdays, reunions, or whatever the occasion – in fact I think there needn’t be a special occasion to justify a little bit of R&R on holiday. Take a look at Nicole’s website Haybarn Mobile Beauty to see the available treatments and prices. Contact her directly to book. You won’t be disappointed.
