We are situated in Mid Devon, where the main towns to visit are Tiverton, Cullompton and Honiton but there are also lovely villages with attractions all of their own for example Uffculme. We are within easy reach of Somerset and the rest of Devon also, and some guests travel even further afield, for example to The Eden Project in Cornwall. This list is of course not exhaustive and may not cater to all tastes, but we attempt to provide a few of the choicest places to visit in the region for various interests.

You may also like to visit our Family Fun page if you are travelling with children.
Visit Mid-Devon's website may also be of use when planning your trip.

A little bit of history

Grand Western Canal at Tiverton - take a trip on the last horse-drawn barge in the country along this peaceful waterway. Alternatively walk or cycle along the towpath or take to the water under your own steam by hiring a kayak or rowing boat from the canal basin. Fascinating visitor centre, great playground, Duck's Ditty floating bar and nearby Canal Tea Rooms for fabulous cream teas. (The horse drawn barge, bar and tea rooms are seasonal so check opening times).

Coldharbour Mill at Uffculme - if you like history then a visit to this working woollen mill is a must, particularly if your visit coincides with a steam up day (check their website for dates). There is a coffee shop at the museum and lovely walking along the River Culm, if you like all the way to Culmstock and back along the river meadows and through woodland.

Exeter's Underground Passages - get a glimpse beneath the city streets in these fascinating passages dating from Roman times. Exeter also has a variety of walking tours on offer if you wish to get a more in-depth look at the historic city. The cathedral and cathedral green are also worth a visit.

Museums - not just for rainy days

RAMM, Exeter - The Royal Albert Memorial Museum and art gallery is a fascinating place to while away a few hours. The ground floor contains extensive history of the city through the ages. It's located in the centre of the city close to other attractions, great eateries, shopping including Gandy Street and the cathedral and castle quarters.

Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life - home to Visit Mid Devon and the Tourist Information Centre, this museum offers a glimpse into rural life and also houses a real life GWR steam engine known as the Tivvy Bumper.

Torquay Museum - small but perfectly formed, Torquay has some interesting exhibits including an exhibition about Agatha Christie who had a holiday home in Devon called Greenway, now owned by the National Trust so you can visit that too!

national treasures

Talking of National Trust, we have a few within easy reach and also further afield in Devon. Not all the stately homes are owned by the National Trust however. Well worth a visit are the following:

Killerton (NT) - south of Cullompton. House with gardens, arboretum and extensive parkland for walking. Apple festival in the orchards in October is lots of fun.

Knightshayes (NT) - near Tiverton. Grand gothic revival house with quirky features, stunning gardens including large kitchen garden with beautiful borders. Lots of dog walking routes around the extensive parkland. Great to combine with a visit to The Lost Kitchen at Chettiscombe for lunch as it is very close to one of Knighthaye's parkland gates.

Powderham Castle (not NT) - home of the Earl of Devon. Well worth a visit for tours of the castle, the beautiful parkland and also the playground and animals located in the walled garden.

glorious gardens

RHS Rosemoor - the West Country's answer to RHS Wisley Rosemoor is located at Great Torrington and is a beautiful garden to visit, especially in June when the roses are at their best.

Hestercombe Garden - These gardens near Taunton are fantastic to explore with landscape garden, waterfall and formal gardens.

Bicton Park Botanical Gardens  - incorporating gardens, glasshouses and a railway.
